Wood's Homes is a non-profit, charitable organization that began as an orphanage in Innisfail in 1914 and has been located in Calgary since about 1925. In 2006, Wood's Homes has 21 programs throughout Calgary, and in Canmore, Wheatland County and Lethbridge and rural areas. As well, we have strong partnerships with many other agencies both within and outside Calgary. With over 30 programs/departments in 20 different locations, Wood's Homes employs about 250 people who offer a broad range of educational and treatment services to about 450 young people and their families every day.

The legacy of Wood's Homes is based on our orphanage roots. We stand for persistent, unconditional and non-judgmental care and service to families, adolescents and children. We also stand for long-term investments and commitment to very troubled and troubling youth and their families.

The work of commitment to high risk adolescents with some very difficult problems is tough. As well the reality is that problems most often happen when people are all together in their homes before and after work and school. These are the times that the employees of Wood's Homes spring into action. The hours of our work are mostly round-the-clock, or at the very least, less traditional than 9 - 5. The kind of work we do requires self-awareness, quick thinking, confidence, a relatively tough skin and an ability to forgive some very bad behavior.

Wood's Homes also requires knowledge. We mostly hire individuals with diplomas and degrees and an affiliation to a professional association. This is because the challenges our children and families face require theory, creativity and the ability of their helpers to make sense out of some very complicated experiences.
